iRIB visits Lake Balaton: Trends, technologies, and the future of electric mobility on the water
Last weekend, the iRIB team visited the Balaton Boat Show in Hungary. Although we weren’t there as exhibitors this year, the event provided an excellent opportunity to experience the latest industry developments firsthand, observe market trends, and engage in interesting conversations with manufacturers, dealers, and water sports enthusiasts.
Lake Balaton is one of the most significant water sports regions in Central Europe and has developed into a key market for modern and sustainable mobility solutions on the water in recent years. Accordingly, it was clearly evident at the trade fair that topics such as electromobility, alternative propulsion concepts, and eco-friendly technologies are becoming increasingly important.
Particularly striking was the rising demand for high-performance propulsion systems. While electric boats were often associated with compromises in range or performance a few years ago, today’s customers expect powerful solutions that can compete with conventional combustion-engine boats in terms of driving pleasure and everyday practicality. The industry is clearly moving in the right direction here.
At the same time, we observed that a large part of the market continues to stick firmly to established concepts and traditional manufacturers. Many of the systems presented are based on technologies that have been expanded and supplemented over years. This often results in very extensive electrical and electronic architectures with numerous control units, interfaces, and complex wiring. While these solutions offer many functions, they often lead to higher installation effort, greater complexity, and correspondingly higher costs.
This is precisely where we see a significant difference in our approach. From our perspective, modern technology doesn’t necessarily have to be complicated. The best solutions emerge where high performance, user-friendliness, and reliability are combined in an intelligent way.
A prime example of this is the Flux Marine FM115 we use. This motor was not developed as an electric version of an existing combustion engine, but was designed from the ground up as a modern electric outboard. The result is an exceptionally well-thought-out complete system with a clear architecture, state-of-the-art technology, and impressive performance.
With a peak output of 175 hp or 127 kW, the FM115 offers performance that convinces even experienced boaters. At the same time, the system avoids unnecessary complexity and focuses consistently on the essentials. Fewer components, clean system integration, and a consistent design ensure high reliability as well as easy operation and maintenance.
The price-performance ratio is particularly noteworthy. High-quality electric mobility on the water is often associated with very high acquisition costs. However, the FM115 impressively demonstrates that modern technology, high performance, and cost-effectiveness do not have to be a contradiction. It is precisely this combination that makes the drive increasingly attractive to many boat owners and interested parties.
The impressions from the Balaton Boat Show have reinforced our belief once more that the future of boating will be electric, powerful, and uncomplicated all at once. Customers aren’t necessarily looking for more and more functions or higher complexity. Rather, they want reliable, efficient, and easy-to-use solutions that are technologically state-of-the-art while offering real added value.
With our iRIB boats and the Flux Marine FM115, we are following exactly this path. The numerous conversations at the trade fair showed that this approach is attracting increasing interest and is capturing the spirit of the times.
